Detailed description of Sonoma Mission Inn & Golf Course

Sonoma Mission Inn & Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Sonoma, California.

The Sonoma golf course first opened for play in 1928. The course was designed by Sam Whiting. Robert Muir Graves renovated the course in 1991.

The Sonoma golf course plays to just under 7,100 yards from the championship tees. This classic layout offers strategic choices. The course is set on 177 acres of rolling terrain highlighted by massive oaks, lakes and sweeping vistas of the Mayacamas Mountains to the east , Sonoma Mountain Range to the west and the neighboring vineyards. The layout is a balance and blend of long and short holes.

This course has very wide fairways, which are primarily straight with only a few dogleg designs. The fairways have some undulation and some mounds on the sides. The greens are quite large with some undulation and some that are domed. Learning to read the greens will be your biggest barrier to scoring well. There is some water on the course but it is only in play on a couple holes. The terrain is fairly flat with some uphill and downhill shots on the back nine.

The back nine offers the golfers excitement with the reachable Par 5 13th and 16th holes. The uphill 11th is a wonderful, short Par 4 followed by the lengthy Par 4 12th that is fairly difficult to stick in two. The finishing hole demands that you navigate a stretched dogleg with a prominent fairway bunker to a green guarded by huge oaks and fronted by a small creek. Watch out for the creek that crosses the fairway in front of the green on hole #18, a 394-yard, par 4, you can't see it from the position of your first shot. The rough is generally tall and thick requiring more club than normal for the distance required. There are numerous sand bunkers on the fairways and around the greens, all of which are large and many of which are deep.

The Sonoma Golf Club is home to the PGA Champion's Tour Charles Schwab Cup Championship each October

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa's Wine Country experience includes access to golf at Sonoma Golf Club.

The course was designed for the Sonoma Mission Inn in 1928 by Sam Whiting, architect of San Francisco's prestigious Olympic Club Lake Course. The golf course was sold during the Great Depression. It was reunited with the resort in the fall of 1998, and privatized in September 2001.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is located in Sonoma Valley, approximately 40 miles north of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge at 100 Boys Boulevard. Sonoma Golf Club is located less that one mile from the Inn. The 177-acre course has a long standing reputation as one of Northern California's finest golf courses. It offers challenging play in a beautiful setting graced by a meandering stream and three shimmering lakes,
